Canopied workbenches line the streets, each cluttered with half-finished inventions: an automated dice-thrower that occasionally eats the dice, a clockwork section-linker, and a device labeled NEXUS PROTOTYPE - DO NOT TOUCH (unless you sign the waiver). The air smells of hot oil, burnt wood, and molten metal. Gears turn. Pistons hiss. Somewhere nearby, something explodes with a muffled whump. No one reacts.
The dwarven Gearsmith gestures to where an apprentice is testing something. It hums, arcing electricity and causing his hair to stand on end. "Everything here breaks," he says, wiping his hands on an oil-black rag. "We fix it, break it, and fix it again. And when it works, it just works!"
